Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is endorsing Bob Turner for Senate.
In a statement, Giuliani said Turner made "history" last year when he won the hotly-contested congressional seat formerly held by the disgraced U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner.
No Republican had held that seat -- New York's 9th district -- since 1923.
"I am confident that he can take that same appeal across party lines that helped him in his last victory and defeat the most liberal Senator in the country, Kirsten Gillibrand," Giuliani said. "If Bob can win in a district that once voted for the likes of Ferraro, Schumer, and Weiner, he can assuredly do even better in a statewide election."
Giuliani chided Gillibrand's tenure in the Senate, reminding voters that she was recently named the “most liberal Senator in the United States” by the National Journal.
"Bob Turner is the only candidate that is able to reach out to the Reagan Democrats and Independents in order to defeat Senator Gillibrand. Bob Turner is the only candidate who has demonstrated the ability to turn deep blue into red. This is why we must support Bob Turner’s candidacy for the United States Senate.
"While in Congress, Bob has stood alongside the courageous leaders of our Party like Congressman Paul Ryan to make the tough decisions needed to get our country back towards fiscal sanity and on a path to economic prosperity."
