The lead Democrat official on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is calling for a more extensive inquiry into Operation Fast and Furious, reports Politico.

Rep. Elijah Cummings released a report Thursday that takes an in depth look at gun law reform suggestions from agents of the Bureau for Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The report is titled “Outgunned” after the agents’ assertions that they are ill-prepared to tackle international drug and weapons trafficking cartels. Tightening gun laws, bureau agents claim, would better enable them to dismantle organized crime along the U.S.-Mexico border.

“No legitimate examination of this issue will be complete without analyzing our nation’s gun laws, which allow tens of thousands of assault weapons to flood into Mexico from the United States ever year, including .50-caliber sniper rifles, multiple AK variants, and scores of others,” Cummings insisted.

Cummings has organized a forum of law enforcement officials and gun control advocates to discuss the issue at hand.

Spokeswoman for Rep. Darrel Issa, Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, insists that Thursday’s forum “will not affect the committee’s continued focus on a reckless operation that has been linked to deaths on both sides of the border.”
