Conservative political blogger and radio host Erick Erickson said he knew one of the sources who leaked the story about comments President Donald Trump made when he met with Russian officials last week, saying the person was pro-Trump.

Erickson explained the story on his website The Resurgent on Tuesday, making the case that leaks by those close to the president were necessary to get his attention.

The Washington Post on Monday published the story about Trump's comments to Russian officials, citing unnamed sources within the Trump administration. The article claimed the president's comments to the Russians "endangers cooperation from an ally that has access to the inner workings of the Islamic State."

Trump cannot take internal criticism, Erickson maintained, which left his aides no choice but to go to the media and "hope for blowback."

"The President cares vastly more about what the press says than what his advisers say. That is a real problem and his advisers are having to recognize and use, even if it causes messy stories to get outside the White House perimeter," he wrote.

Erickson also claimed he was told what Trump said to the Russian officials was "actually far worse than what is being reported" and the president didn't understand "his loose lips can get valuable assets in the field killed."

Erickson wrote he took stories from unnamed sources about Trump "with a grain of salt," explaining, "The media hates the President so much that they'll run a negative story about him without very much provocation."
