Kentucky environmental lawyer Tom Fitzgerald is considering a run against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in next year's Kentucky Senate race, The Hill reported Tuesday.

Fitzgerald, a Democrat who chairs the Kentucky Resources Council describes the GOP's McConnell as one of the "nastiest" politicians in Congress and says he's being recruited by a "prominent Democratic donor and activist" to challenge the minority leader.

Fitzgerald said he knows the odds are against him, but believes he could be competitive nonpartisan in the race, even though he has worked for decades as an environmental activist and lobbyist.

"I've heard, over the years that people think that I would restore some public confidence in that office because I have been very pragmatic in the way that we've tried to approach public policy problems in recent years," he told The Hill.

Jonathan Miller, a powerful Democrat in the state, says 34-year-old Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes would still be the most powerful contender against McConnell if she decides to run.

Miller said he and Fitzgerald have discussed that possibility, "and I think he agrees," Miller said.

The Democrat said Fitzgerald has been a great leader in the state on environmental issues, would begin the race against McConnell "with a severe handicap in that he's unknown to most of the state and hasn't ever been out raising money."
