Amid the entire obsession with polls, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has made a stealthy rise to the top and she predicts he will be victorious, says Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan.

“I think he’s stealing in ‘like a thief with good tools,’ in [author] Walker Percy’s old words,” she writes. “While everyone is looking at the polls and the storm, Romney’s slipping into the presidency. He’s quietly rising, and he’s been rising for a while.”

It’s hard to make heads or tails out of the poll data, Noonan says. But as John Dickerson of CBS News pointed out last month it appears that voters are “quietly cooking something up, something we don’t know about,” she writes. “I think they are, and I think it’s this: a Romney win.”

The evidence includes rising crowds at Romney events, with some attendees waiting hours in the cold.

“His rallies look like rallies now, not enactments,” Noonan says. “In some new way he’s caught his stride.” In addition, Romney signs are popping up in yards across the nation.

Many Republicans have turned pro-Romney from anti-Obama, she says.

“They really want Romney now, they’ll go out and vote, the election has taken on a new importance to them.

There is no denying the Republicans have the passion now, the enthusiasm. The Democrats do not. Independents are breaking for Romney.”

Bottom line: “Is it possible this whole thing is playing out before our eyes and we’re not really noticing because we’re too busy looking at data on paper instead of what’s in front of us?” Noonan says.
