Durbin Calls Republicans 'Squealing Political Pigs'

By    |   Thursday, 19 September 2013 12:10 PM EDT

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin called Republicans a bunch of "squealing political pigs" this week, accusing them of bowing to tea party ideology in their effort to kill Obamacare by attaching it to a bill almost certain to lead to a government shutdown.

"We need to act like adults not like squealing political pigs," the Illinois Democrat said on the Senate floor Wednesday, according to The Hill.

"If that is what the Tea Party Republicans think is leadership, God save the United States of America."

Durbin was referring to a decision by House Republican leaders to attach a measure defunding Obamacare to a stopgap spending bill that would keep the government operating beyond Sept. 30, the last day of the current fiscal year. But even if the bill passes the House, it's almost certain to be killed in the Democratic-controlled Senate, where even some Republicans may vote against it.

Durbin said House Republicans have managed to produce a "self-imposed crisis" almost certain to lead to a government shutdown unless they withdraw language from spending bill barring any funding for the healthcare law.
