As Democrats call for the suspension of senior presidential adviser Jared Kushner's security clearance, House Oversight Ranking Member Elijah Cummings has sent a letter citing concerns about whether the Trump administration is properly safeguarding classified information, The Daily Caller reported on Wednesday.
Cummings sent the letter to White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, saying Kushner's alleged failure to disclose meetings with Russian officials was reason to suspend his security clearance, as was former national security adviser Michael Flynn's decision to mislead Vice President Mike Pence on communications with the Russian ambassador.
"Based on a number of recent incidents, we are now seeking documents relating to the White House's compliance with procedures governing the suspension of security clearances while allegations against White House employees are under investigation," Cummings wrote.
Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee also are requesting information on all White House officials who quit or were fired due to a criminal investigation.
Last month, more than 40 House Democrats urged the White House to revoke Kushner's security clearance "to protect national security" until the FBI finishes its probe into potential collusion between officials on President Donald Trump's campaign team and agents of the Russian government, Politico reported.
That request came after reports that Kushner sought a back channel to Moscow that would rely on Russian facilities in an apparent attempt to avoid detection by American officials.
