A Republican debate in Maryland Sunday turned ugly when competing candidates for the U.S. House jumped on incumbent Roscoe G. Bartlett, accusing him of accomplishing almost nothing during his 20 years in Congress.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the seven candidates looking to unseat Bartlett in the April 3 GOP primary also accused him of lacking “the sense of urgency” needed to win this November in the 6th District, which is expected to be one of the most competitive House races in the country.

“What is he going to accomplish over the next two years that he has not been able to in 20?” candidate Brandon Rippeon asked at one point during the debate. “Congressman Bartlett has had half of my lifetime to address and fix and correct the issues that we've talked about here today.”

For his part, Bartlett declined to respond to any of the candidates directly. Instead he spoke of how proud he was of his 10-term record and of the difficult decisions lawmakers have to make.

“The bills that come before Congress are generally huge bills,” he said. “Every time I vote ‘no’ on a bill, I’m unhappy that there are frequently some good things in there I would have liked to have voted ‘yes’ on.”
