Republican Dan Coats has defeated Democrat Brad Ellsworth in the race for the Senate seat in Indiana, according to a projection from CNN.

With about 5 percent of the votes counted, Coats has 54 percent and Ellsworth 41 percent.

Coats will occupy the seat being vacated by Democrat Evan Bayh.
