A new poll from Boston NPR station WBUR shows Massachusetts Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren leading GOP incumbent Scott Brown 45 percent to 40 percent among likely voters.

The survey, conducted Sept. 15-17, has a 4.4 percentage point margin of error. It’s the fourth poll released this week indicating that Warren has a lead.

She is ahead of Brown 35 to 27 percent on the question of who best “understands the needs of middle-class families.”

The Democrat also leads when it comes to the issue of who “will stand up for regular people when in the Senate.” The tally there is 39 percent for Warren compared to 29 percent for Brown. Warren has gained on this issue from 30 percent in February, while Brown has slipped from 33 percent.

And Warren is gaining ground on the question of whether voters agree with the candidate on key issues. A total of 45 percent of respondents say she’s the one on that score, while 33 percent say it’s Brown. Both candidates tallied 35 percent in February.

To be sure, Brown does have some advantages. A total of 54 percent say he has deep roots in Massachusetts, while only 13 percent feel that way about Warren. And 35 percent of voters believe Brown is running a more positive campaign, compared to 21 percent for Warren.
