Two well-known conservatives are backing attorney Curtis Bostic over former Gov. Mark Sanford in a South Carolina Republican primary runoff for a vacated seat in Congress.

According to Roll Call online newspaper, former Sen. Rick Santorum and entertainer Pat Boone have announced their endorsement of Bostic to succeed former GOP Rep. Tim Scott, who was appointed to replace former Sen. Jim DeMint.

“Today I’m singing the praises of Curtis Bostic,” Boone, a 1950s pop star, wrote in a press release from the 60 Plus Association. “As a former U.S. Marine, Curtis Bostic can always be counted on to be faithful to his office.”

The “faithful” reference, Roll Call reported, was “a fairly overt allusion to Sanford’s highly publicized marital infidelity.”

For his part, Santorum, a 2012 GOP presidential candidate who could run again in 2016, said Bostic’s “groundswell finish [in the primary] to a runoff spot signals a win for the strength of his grass-roots supporters and his robust conservative values.”

Sanford responded Wednesday with a list of several South Carolina supporters, including state Rep. Bill Herbkersman.

The winner of the runoff on April 2 will face Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert, in the May 7 special election.

Although the House seat is located in a traditionally Republican district, a recent poll shows a dead heat developing between Colbert Busch and Sanford if the former governor wins the primary.
