WASHINGTON (Reuters) - South Carolina Democrat John
Spratt, head of the House Budget Committee, lost his
re-election bid Tuesday, Fox News projected.
Spratt has served 27 years in the House of Representatives
and rose to lead the powerful budget committee which sets
annual spending priorities. He backed President Barack Obama's
landmark healthcare legislation.
He lost to Republican Mick Mulvaney, a state lawmaker who
received strong backing from national Republican
organizations.
