Veteran political reporter Andrew Malcolm says Donald Trump's "unpredictable, usually counterproductive behavior" raises the question of whether his real idea of winning the presidency is electing Hillary Clinton and "devastating" the Republican Party.

"Since locking up the requisite delegates to hijack the GOP, Trump has done everything possible to torpedo his campaign as a serious candidate – and help Clinton's stumbling candidacy," Malcolm, a columnist for McClatchy Newspapers, writes in a column posted Tuesday.

"His fundraising is tardy and halfhearted. He's being battered by millions of dollars' worth in unanswered negative ads like the ones that bloodied Mitt Romney beyond repair in 2012. His campaign staff turmoil dominated June news."

As well, Macolm says, Trump and Clinton are "longtime friends" and "supporters of liberal causes."

"He's contributed generously to her campaigns and family foundation. Trump conferred with her husband just before announcing his candidacy," he says.

Malcolm adds that even with Clinton's "serial setbacks" — including a scolding by FBI director James Covey over her use of a private email server for government business while she was secretary of state — "Trump routinely steps in to divert attention back to himself.

"Whether it's his uncontrollable spotlight addiction or not, the result is to protect the Democrat he allegedly wants to defeat."
