Wyoming Democratic Party chairwoman Leslie Petersen has won the party's nomination in the governor's race.

Petersen declared her candidacy in late May after the party struggled to attract a viable candidate to replace outgoing Democratic Gov. Dave Freudenthal. He is stepping down after two terms.

Despite winning Tuesday's primary, Petersen faces a tough battle ahead as the state GOP is intent on retaking the governor's mansion in the heavily Republican state.

Petersen has tried to capitalize on popular support for Freudenthal to bolster her candidacy.
