GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (AP) — More than 10,000 absentee ballots appear to hold the key to deciding a tight New York congressional race in which fewer than 400 votes separate the candidates in a Long Island district.
The Associated Press called the race for incumbent Democrat Timothy Bishop the 1st Congressional District winner on election night, when he had a 3,400-vote lead over Republican challenger Randy Altschuler.
That call was withdrawn Wednesday after a review of voting machines by the Suffolk County Board of Elections showed Altschuler leading, 92,702 to 92,319.
Bishop wants a judge to order a full recount, but Altschuler's side has balked.
The deadline for absentee ballots was Tuesday; military members have until Nov. 24, although all ballots must have been postmarked by Nov. 1.
