WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Republican Delaware Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell is telling her supporters to be encouraged despite her loss to Democrat Chris Coons.

The tea party-backed O'Donnell struggled to shake old cable-show footage in which she spoke out against masturbation and talked about dabbling in witchcraft as a teenager. Surrounded by friends and family, she says the Republican Party will never be the same after her candidacy.

O'Donnell says that although the outcome isn't what her campaign worked so hard for, their voice was heard.

O'Donnell's upset win in the GOP primary over moderate congressman Mike Castle likely cost Republicans the contest. Castle had been heavily favored to win Vice President Joe Biden's old seat.
