Donald Trump admitted on national television that he cannot understand presidential candidate Rick Santorum’s sudden surge in popularity.

“When you look at what’s going on, it’s hard to believe,” Trump, a supporter of Santorum’s Republican rival Mitt Romney, told Matt Lauer on NBC’s Today show Thursday morning.

“It’s an amazing thing, but Santorum … lost his election in Pennsylvania as a sitting senator by 19 points. So the people who knew him best turned him out and they let him go. Locally he did even worse.”

Trump told Lauer that he can't understand why Romney is not doing better.

“Mitt Romney’s a good man; he’s got some great ideas – strong on China, strong on OPEC – I don’t get it, I don’t see why he’s not catching on better.”
