After Texas Gov. Rick Perry entered the presidential race Saturday, many political observers assumed the nomination field is closed. But that may not be the case, Politico reports.

Perry’s entrance has sparked talk of more candidates to follow. For example, star Republican strategist Karl Rove told Fox News Monday that there’s plenty of room for more candidates and cited New Jersey Gov. Christ Christie and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan as possibilities.

“We’ve got a good field. I don’t think it is the end, though, of the field,” Rove said. “I think we are likely to see several other candidates think seriously about getting in.”

They have plenty of time, given that Nov. 22 is the first deadline for filing paperwork to appear on ballots.

“That’s the last day somebody could get in without starting to lose a place in some of the early primaries and caucuses. I suspect we are likely to see in early September and late August,” Rove said.

The Weekly Standard reported Tuesday that Ryan is “strongly considering a run,” although Ryan later dismissed that report.
