Rep. Ron Paul appeared on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” Monday to make clear that his presidential candidacy is no joke. “I work under the assumption that you don't always have to convince immediately 51 percent,” the Texas Republican said on Jon Stewart’s program.

“You do need hardcore people who understand the message. Those are the people who will volunteer, work hard, donate the money, and then the persuasion comes, and I think that's where we are.”

Story continues below video.

It’s all about the polls, Paul says. “I think that once you get to 10 percent, you have the number. We're 10, 14, 15 percent, so I think we most likely are on the verge of an explosion of interest in this country."

Paul had 13 percent support in a USA Today poll issued last week, but the RealClearPolitics average of the past six polls puts Paul’s support at 7.7 percent.
