The concern about voter fraud continues. New Mexico Republican Secretary of State Dianna Duran has directed 64,000 cases of possible illegal voting activity to the State Department of Public Safety for investigation, the
Santa Fe New Mexican reports.
That amounts to more than 10 percent of the 607,700 people who participated in the state’s 2010 general elections.
Duran's office points out that some of the cases could stem from clerical errors rather than criminal activity.
"It goes without saying, as is the case with virtually any set of data files, that there may be data-entry errors," Bureau of Elections Director Bobbi Shearer said. "Only a thorough review, file by file, will tell.
Duran and Republican Gov. Susana Martinez favor a bill that would require people to produce photo identification at the polls before voting.
