You can sympathize with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for not understanding why Democrats are criticizing him so strongly for stating the obvious. He said job No. 1 for Republicans over the next two years will be to defeat President Barack Obama in 2012, Politico reports.

McConnell, Democrats, Obama“I know the president’s goal is to get a second term. It’s not surprising that Republicans would want him to not get re-elected,” McConnell now says.

Democrats have gone after McConnell for telling the National Journal last week that “the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president."

The attacks are “kind of laughable,” McConnell said Monday. Democrats are only focusing on him because “they don’t have much to talk about,” the Kentucky senator says.

“They can’t talk about any of the things they passed.”
