The Justice Department plans to look into Sen. Bill Nelson’s complaint that a bill overhauling Florida’s elections discourages voting, the Post on Politics blog of The Palm Beach Post reports. Nelson and a number of Florida’s other congressional Democrats say the bill, which Republican Gov. Rick Scott may sign this week, might violate the federal Voting Rights Act by limiting registration drives and change-of-address procedures, and by shortening the amount of time for early balloting.

In a letter to Nelson, Assistant Attorney General Ronald Welch wrote that the Justice Department will “carefully consider the information you have provided.”

Supporters of the bill say it will cut down on vote fraud, improve transparency, and prevent a repeat of the re-count fiasco that Florida went through in the 2000 presidential election.

Nelson was criticized for comparing his fight against the bill with the heroic military operation that killed Osama bin Laden.
