Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told a town hall meeting in Columbus, Ohio, Wednesday that he has guns, but it’s unclear whether he owns them. In response to a question at the meeting, Romney said, “I have guns myself,” ABC News reports.

“I believe in the second amendment, I’ll protect the second amendment, I have guns myself. Not going to tell you where they are. Don’t have them on myself either, all right.”

But in 2007, Romney said he had a gun, and it turned out to belong to his son. In an online debate with the Boston Globe that year, Romney said, “I have a gun of my own. I go hunting myself. I’m a member of the NRA and believe firmly in the right to bear arms.”

The interviewer said, “Ah, excuse me, but isn’t that your son Josh’s gun?” And Romney replied, “Um, well, yes, but so what? He has several guns out at our vacation place in Utah, and I use them from time to time.”

After ABC’s story appeared Wednesday, a Romney campaign spokesman called back the writer to say he has two shotguns.

At the town hall meeting, Romney offered a defense for gun ownership.

“Let’s protect the right of Americans to bear arms whether for hunting, for sportsmen, for personal protection, for whatever legal purpose someone might have,” he said.
