Cutting $1 trillion from the U.S. military to deal with the debt and deficit weighing down the economy would weaken America’s influence around the world, Mitt Romney’s senior campaign adviser Eric Fehrnstrom said.

“The measure of America’s foreign policy is, how strong is our influence in the world,” Fehrnstrom said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.” “Our influence is dependent on two things: our economic strength and on our military strength. It is a combination of this weak economy and a hollowed-out military that is emboldening our adversaries and weakening our influence around the world.”

On the topic of foreign policy, Fehrnstrom said that the former Massachusetts governor proposes enabling the Syrian opposition to wage a fair fight against President Bashar al-Assad.

“What Gov. Romney would do is encourage the United States to work with our partner to identify, organize and arm the opposition,” Fehrnstrom said.

Romney, who officially kicked off his campaign one year ago in New Hampshire, is America’s best hope to repair the economy, Fehrnstrom said.

“This is not a social-election issue, George,” he told host George Stephanopoulos, adding Romney’s focus remains “the massive debt burdens that we were accumulating and would be passing on to our children and our grandchildren.”

“That’s why he’s running for president,” Fehrnstrom said.
