Washington pundits have assumed that Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., can’t stomach former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s moderate views and thus won’t support him for president. Not so fast, says the conservative powerhouse, The Hill reports.

“I haven’t stricken anybody off my list, or put anybody on it, really,” said DeMint, who backed Romney last time around. “And it’s going to be several months before I look at endorsing.”

A source close to DeMint said in March that he “would never consider” endorsing Romney again unless he acknowledged that his healthcare reform in Massachusetts was “a colossal mistake.”

Romney stood by his plan in a speech last week, and DeMint said afterward that he respects Romney for confronting the issue.

“I’m not going to put conditions on people,” DeMint said. “There’s going to be more than one issue in the campaign,” he said.
