Sen. Cory Booker said that President Donald Trump's claims of voter fraud are "wrong and outrageous."

Booker made the statement during an appearance Thursday on CNN's "OutFront" program.

Booker said that Trump's assertions that his loss in the popular vote was due to voter fraud could affect minorities.

"What (Trump) is saying is just wrong and outrageous and, in many ways, he's doing the bidding of those who want to try to undermine voting," said Booker.

The New Jersey Democrat also said the real problem is voter suppression, in which laws are "narrowly tailored" to keep certain communities from voting.

Trump and potential attorney general Jeff Sessions are not addressing that issue, Booker said. "They're going after a fiction that ultimately will play into the hands of these kinds of lies that Donald Trump is blatantly spreading."

Trump is "repeatedly lying to the American public," Booker said.

Business Insider noted that the 2016 presidential election was the first one after the Supreme Court struck down parts of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which led to some states closing polling sites, which used to require federal approval.

ProPublica cited a study that said some southern states had 868 fewer places to vote after that change.

The president has claimed that an investigation into voter fraud is required, but has provided no proof that his claims of fraud are valid. His own lawyers, in a campaign filing, said no evidence was found to suggest "fraud or mistake."
