Former Vice President Dick Cheney has gone from endorsing Republican nominee-to-be Mitt Romney last month to deciding to host a fundraiser for him.

The July 12 event is a dinner at the home of Cheney and his wife Lynne in Jackson Hole, Wyo. It was announced in an email sent by the Romney campaign to potential donors, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The event will be segmented, so that donors who give extra to get to eat with Romney and the former vice president. The Romney campaign started his Victory Fund last month to garner as much as $75,800 per donor by bundling Romney contributions with the Republican National Committee and four state parties.

The fundraising event might be useful in attracting any donors to former President George W. Bush who haven’t given to Romney yet. Cheney can also help Romney establish his conservative bona fides.

The former vice president is perhaps best known for advocating a strong military policy, and Romney has mostly stayed away from foreign policy during the campaign so far, focusing instead on the economy. But when Romney has offered his views, they have been hawkish, much like Cheney’s. Romney has accused President Barack Obama of weakness in dealing with other nations.

But the Obama campaign may see the fundraiser as an opportunity to connect Romney to Bush. Romney will have to decide how closely he wants to ally himself to Bush and Cheney. The former Massachusetts governor already has brought several former Bush administration officials on to his campaign team as advisers.

But it’s still unclear how active a role Bush and Cheney will play and whether either will speak at the convention.
