WASHINGTON (AP) — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's presidential campaign raised $5.5 million last month.

Financial reports released late Monday show Gingrich had about $1.8 million in the bank at the end of January.

Gingrich's campaign surged during the same month when he won the South Carolina primary. But his candidacy was helped financially by an outside "super" political action committee. The Winning Our Future super PAC raised $11 million, nearly all from a wealthy friend of Gingrich's.

Reports show Gingrich's campaign is still in debt by about $1.7 million.
