The gloves are off.
Sen. John McCain is breaking with President Donald Trump on some big issues – and with his next six years secure after re-election, the Arizona Republican is not shy about speaking up, USA Today reported.
From voter fraud, to torture, to Cabinet picks, McCain has come out swinging, the news outlet reported.
In an interview Wednesday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," McCain asserted "there's no evidence" of Trump having lost the popular vote because of voter fraud, as he has claimed, "and I think that those who allege that have to come up with some substantiation of the claim."
And he is up against Trump on the use of waterboarding, torture, and the return of secret prisons to interrogate terrorists, USA Today reported.
"The president can sign whatever executive orders he likes," McCain wrote in a statement. "But the law is the law. We are not bringing back torture in the United States of America."
Of a reported draft executive order to reopen secret prisons, McCain dismissed the idea as being unable to "stand a day in court if they tried to restore that."
Press Secretary Sean Spicer has denied the draft came from the White House, the newspaper reported.
McCain also has attacked Trump's pick for the Office of Management and Budget, South Carolina Rep. Mick Mulvaney, over his votes on military spending, the newspaper reported.
"I’m interested in what our military needs and whether they're receiving it," McCain said to Mulvaney during a hearing Tuesday, USA Today reported. "It's clear from your record that you've been an impediment to that for years."
