The Virginia Senate race is heating up. Former Republican Sen. and Gov. George Allen has announced his candidacy for the seat being abandoned by Democrat Jim Webb next year. And now Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine is poised to enter the race, The Hill reports.

That could make for one of the most heated Senate races next year. Kaine initially said he wouldn’t run for the post, but knowledgeable sources indicate he’ll announce he’s running, perhaps within a few days.

Allen is the favorite on the Republican side, but he already faces one tea-party backed candidate in the primary, and other GOP challengers may jump in the race too.

Republicans take the threat of Kaine seriously, with the National Republican Senatorial Committee labeling him as President Barack Obama’s top “cheerleaders” as soon as Webb announced his retirement.
