The Senate race in Missouri is “too close to call” as the two candidates face off in a second and last debate on Thursday night.

Todd Akin, a Republican who was urged to drop out of the race by fellow GOP Party members after his “legitimate rape” remarks, is closing the gap with Democrat incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill.

“I don’t know that the polls can accurately predict what’s going to happen at the election just yet. It seems to me that this race is too close to call,” George Connor, head of the political science department at Missouri State University, told Talking Points Memo.

“McCaskill would have been behind before the ‘legitimate rape’ comments,” Connor said. “Basically what those comments and the comments since have done is level the playing field.”

Akin's third-quarter fundraising report shows he has about $553,000 cash on hand compared to McCaskill, who has about $2.1 million.

Akin, a six-term representative from the St. Louis area, told The Wall Street Journal that he is fighting for something bigger than jobs.

"The economy is a big problem, but it speaks to a bigger problem, and that is you and I are losing our freedom," he said.
