Democrats have a narrow 53-47 majority in the Senate, with 23 Democratic-held seats up for election next year. With Republicans on the rise, they’re very worried about maintaining their control. So it’s no wonder that top Democratic senators have already begun a major fundraising effort for the 2012 elections, Politico reports.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada already has helped to bring in $700,000 for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC).

In addition, smaller fundraising events hosted by other Democratic senators have generated tens of thousands of dollars too.

Even Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin and prominent New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, rivals in their hope to succeed Reid, are cooperating in the fundraising effort.

Durbin and Schumer will host a big DSCC shindig at a New York Yankees-Chicago Cubs game next month in Chicago.
