New GOP Rep.: I Fear Obama Wants Immigration Controversy

Wednesday, 05 November 2014 05:33 PM EST

President Barack Obama may be looking for a political storm with his promise Wednesday to sign an executive order granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants, says Lee Zeldin, the newly-elected GOP congressman for New York's 1st District.

"This is my fear, that this president wants this controversy. This isn't just one moment in time where he's going to pass an executive order," Zeldin said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Whether he is met with resistance or not, he's going to do it again. It's outrageous and really the Republicans are going to need to talk with each other — House, Senate, conservatives, moderates — and discuss the best path forward utilizing the powers that Congress has."

Zeldin said the first order of business for the new Republican-controlled Congress should be resurrecting some of the hundreds of bills that were rejected by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

"There have been hundreds of bills that House Republicans have passed, Harry Reid has declared dead on arrival, he wouldn't bring them up for debate, wouldn't bring them up for a vote," Zeldin said.

"Bills that would help create jobs, help with our energy policy, our healthcare policy, immigration, education. Conservatives, Republicans all across this country have good ideas that now are going on this president's desk and that's what I'm excited about being part of.

"Republicans have gotten a bad rap from the mainstream media, obviously Democrats are doing their best to feed into it, making it seem like these hundreds of bills were the Republicans blocking [them]."

Zeldin said that as the commander-in-chief's popularity wanes, the "Democrats [are]going to be very hard pressed not to go along with very good solid pieces of legislation."
