Donald Trump "did OK" in his final debate with Hillary Clinton on Wednesday — "but probably not well enough to expand his base," because he lacked proper preparation, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay told Newsmax TV.

"If he had just spent four hours . . ." DeLay told host J.D. Hayworth on Wednesday night's "Newsmax TV Post-Debate Special." "He was told what the issues were going to be.

"All you had to do was memorize one sentence for each one of those issues that makes sense.

"When I listened to [the debate] and many of his answers, it was just rambling," DeLay said. "It wasn't, at least in his mind, well thought out and prepared."

Therefore, Trump's success in November will greatly depend on how the Republican nominee "handles the next few days or weeks, because I hope to God that his campaign has prepared for a follow-up to the debate.

"He was horrible in the follow-up in the last debate — and he can support a lot of what he did tonight if he's very well organized in the upcoming few days."
