Biologist: Lab Could Have Potentially Made Ebola a Bioweapon

By    |   Thursday, 13 November 2014 04:44 PM EST

A top U.S. biologist says he was sent by the U.S. government to inspect a still-functioning Soviet-era bioweapons lab in Siberia that could have potentially been used to transform Ebola into a deadly bioweapon.

"We wanted to make sure the expertise that was necessary to develop those agents in biological weapons didn't go elsewhere," Dr. David Sanders, associate professor of biological sciences at Purdue University, said Thursday on the "Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"We wanted to make sure they continue to be employed in strictly defensive uses and approaches to these viruses that they were focused on, for example, developing anti-virals rather than using these in an offensive manner, which was their plan back in the Soviet era."
