Americans’ discontent with the nation’s state of affairs is becoming more and more apparent. A Fox News poll released Thursday shows that 64 percent of voters feel unhopeful about where the country is headed, while only 33 percent feel hopeful.

The unhappiness is strongest among Republicans, with 81 percent feeling unhopeful. Among independents, 74 percent are unhopeful. As for the Democrats, a surprising 49 percent are hopeful, compared to 46 percent who are unhopeful.

Dissatisfaction over the economy and the new debt/deficit law are fueling the angst. The survey shows that 71 percent of voters believe the economy is worsening, up from 58 percent just three weeks ago. Meanwhile, 52 percent of voters disapprove of this month’s debt/deficit agreement.
