UN observers have been in Syria for only two days, but the escalating violence is already casting doubt on their ability to ensure the UN-brokered cease-fire is adhered to. The cease-fire, it appears, is failing, and probably cannot succeed in securing even a temporary peace unless one country in particular stops blaming the opposition and starts pressuring Syrian President Bashar al Assad to honor it.
