Mitt Romney and his team spent $1.2 billion in the presidential race compared to $1 billion by Obama and his allies, according to an analysis by Politico.com

About 40 percent of Romney's spending was done by super PACs and outside groups; that number was about 12 percent for Obama.

The website's analysis indicates that the massive spending sprees by both sides in what is the most expensive presidential race in history, may have ultimately hurt the GOP.

The wild spending and unlimited outside groups with huge accounts led Democrats to up their game too.

But all the money spent didn't really help either party keep control over the process or the message and may have sent weak candidates to elections that they ultimately does.

According to Politico, both sides are gearing up to raise money but are thinking about just how to change the system for the better.
