Despite recently released videos that apparently show Planned Parenthood officials talking about harvesting and selling the organs of aborted babies, a
new Monmouth University poll reveals that most Americans are opposed to cutting off federal funding to the organization.
According to the Monmouth poll, 39 percent of Americans support cutting off federal funding for Planned Parenthood, but a larger number, 49 percent, oppose it.
The poll also shows that 37 percent of Americans have a positive opinion of Planned Parenthood, and 26 percent have a negative view. But a large number — 34 percent of those polled — said they had no opinion.
Meanwhile, 28 percent of respondents said they believed the organization tries to profit off aborted fetuses, while 17 percent do not believe it and 55 percent said they did not know what to believe.
Although the poll shows that most Americans support fetal tissue research, public opinion is less favorable than it was in a Quinnipiac University poll conducted in 2012. In that poll, 55 percent favored such research and 22 percent opposed it.
The Monmouth poll was conducted before a standalone
Republican-led bill to defund Planned Parenthood failed Monday to defeat a Democratic filibuster; 53 senators voted in favor of the defunding bill and 46 voted against it.
The Center for Medical Progress, the anti-abortion group that so far has released five undercover videos said to show Planned Parenthood officials and employees discussing fetal tissue, says that several more are expected.
In the Monmouth poll, among those who have seen or heard about the videos, 43 percent believe they are an accurate depiction of what occurred, while 39 percent felt the videos were edited to make Planned Parenthood look badly. Another 19 percent are unsure.
"The recent videos may have had an impact, but those who have been paying the most attention are mainly Republicans, who already had a negative opinion of the organization," said Patrick Murray, the director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute in New Jersey.
The Monmouth University poll was conducted July 30-Aug. 2 by telephone of 1,203 adults and has a margin of error of 2.8 percent.
