Gallup Poll: Majority Favors Military Action to Defend S Korea

A 55 percent majority of Americans believe the United States should use its military forces to help defend South Korea if the North follows through on its threats to attack, according to a Gallup poll conducted April 2-3.

At the same time, 34 percent of the 1,025 adult respondents surveyed by telephone oppose military action, and 10 percent don’t know or don’t have an opinion.

Among those closely following the news about a possible attack, 66 percent say we should use force to defend South Korea, 27 percent say we shouldn’t, and 6 percent don’t know or don’t have an opinion.

Among those who aren’t following the news about the standoff closely, 37 percent say we should use military force, 48 percent say we shouldn’t, and 15 percent don’t know or don’t have an opinion.

On the issue of whether North Korea will strike the South within six months, 43 percent say it’s likely, 44 percent say it’s unlikely, and 13 percent don’t know or don’t have an opinion.

On the question of whether North Korea will take military action against the United States  during the next six months, 28 percent say it’s likely, 58 percent say it’s unlikely, and 14 percent don’t know or don’t have an opinion.
