Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., previously a key holdout on the budget resolution, on Tuesday endorsed the plan because "it provides a path forward on tax reform," the Washington Post reported.
"I support the Senate budget resolution because it provides a path forward on tax reform," McCain said in a statement. "I have long supported efforts to fix our burdensome tax system and hope Congress will produce meaningful reform that simplifies the tax code, strengthens America's middle class and boosts our economy."
The Senate will vote on the plan later this week and, if Republicans succeed in passing it, they will be one step closer to approving the tax cuts likely by the end of the year as President Donald Trump has promised.
McCain previously said his vote hinged on additional military funding, but said late Tuesday tax reform was the main reason he would support the budget.
"For too long, draconian budget cuts to the military have crippled readiness and put the lives of our service members in danger," McCain said. "At the end of the day, we all know that the Senate budget resolution will not impact final appropriations."
Republicans only need 50 votes to pass the budget.
