A majority of Americans back Israel in its attack on the Gaza Strip, according to a new CNN/ORC poll.

The poll, taken by ORC International Nov. 16-18, shows that 57 percent of respondents think Israel was justified in taking military action against Hamas in Gaza. Only 25 percent feel Israel’s actions are unjustified, and 19 percent have no opinion. The percentages add to more than 100 because of rounding.

To be sure, Americans are less enamored with Israel’s attack on Gaza this time around than they were at the time of the last assault in January 2009. Back then, 63 percent supported Israel’s action, 31 percent were opposed, and 6 percent had no opinion.

As for the present, 59 percent of Americans say their sympathies lie more with Israel, while 13 percent choose the Palestinians, 13 percent have no opinion, 11 percent list neither, and 3 percent say both.

In May, 2011, using a half-sample size, 67 percent chose Israel, 16 percent chose the Palestinians, 9 percent chose neither, 5 percent chose both, and 3 percent had no opinion.

Three years ago, 60 percent chose Israel, 17 percent chose the Palestinians, 15 percent chose neither, 5 percent chose both, and 4 percent had no opinion.
