Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich shares Sen. Rand Paul’s contention that the GOP is stuck in the mud.

"I do think the old guard of the party sometimes gets a little too crusty and a little too anti-ideas, and I think that's unfortunate," Gingrich told CNN Friday.

Story continues below.

His comments came a day after the Kentucky GOP senator criticized the party as "stale and moss-covered." Some Republicans have been upset with Paul’s messages in recent days.

As for former presidential candidate Gingrich, he repeated his displeasure that Republican Govs. Bob McDonnell of Virginia and Chris Christie of New Jersey were shut out of the Conservative Political Action Conference.

That means only "95 percent" of top conservatives are present at the gala, Gingrich says.
"I think they should have invited both governors to speak. They're both remarkable reformers."

Gingrich says his position against gay marriage wasn’t swayed by Ohio GOP Sen. Rob Portman's change of heart in support of gay marriage. But Gingrich also suggested Republicans will have to face up to the fact that some states have legalized gay marriage.

"We're faced with realities that are different than my personal beliefs," he says.
