Former GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich lambasted vice president Joe Biden for his contention in Thursday’s debate that he was unaware of requests for additional security to protect U.S. diplomats in Libya.
“Biden on Benghazi was so wrong last night, it’s going to haunt them from now until the next debate,” Gingrich said Friday on CBS’s “This Morning,” Politico
The next debate is between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney Tuesday.
In Thursday’s debate, Biden said, “we weren’t told they wanted more security” in Libya. It’s an open fact that security officials in Libya asked the State Department for more personnel. But it’s unclear whether the White House was ever aware of the request.
Ed Gillespie, a senior adviser to the Romney campaign, told CNN there’s a “clear contradiction” between Biden’s statements and congressional testimony from the top security officer in Libya.
“Either the former regional security officer for the State Department for Libya was wrong in his sworn testimony before Congress about the request for more security for Benghazi, or the vice president wasn’t telling the truth last night in the debate before the American people,” Gillespie said. “Somebody’s not telling the truth.”
