A coalition group supporting same-sex marriage released a new video ad Friday ahead of next week's Supreme Court hearings on the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8, both of which define marriage as the legal union between a man and a woman.
According to
Politico, the 30-second spot costing $150,000 will air during political talk shows this weekend and on national cable channels as part of a $1 million nation-wide campaign to raise awareness about the issue.
The ad from the Respect for Marriage Coalition opens with a voiceover saying, “A growing majority of Americans have come to believe it’s time to allow marriage for gay and lesbian couples. Here’s why.”

It then goes on to show testimony from ordinary Americans about how they support gay marriage on behalf of friends and family members.
Last week, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman provided some unexpected momentum to the same-sex marriage debate when he stunned his Republican Party colleagues by announcing that he now supports same-sex marriage. The catalyst for his decision to go public with a reversal of his past position turned out to be his son, who revealed to his family two years ago that he is gay.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also added new strength to calls for legalizing same-sex unions when she appeared in ad voicing her support.
