On the eve of what is billed as a bipartisan summit on stalled healthcare reform, President Barack Obama continues to disregard Republican proposals in favor of “the worst of both [House and Senate] bills,” noted political consultant Dick Morris tells Newsmax.

The president is “totally not serious” about considering Republican ideas, Morris says in an interview with Newsmax.TV. “He’s giving us a terrible bill.”

Obama’s proposed tax increases to finance his healthcare proposal would put the top rate for federal, state and Medicare taxes at about 50 percent, Morris says.

In addition, Obama wants to raise the capital gains tax. “Every single time you raise the capital gains tax, your revenues go crashing, because there’s less investment and spending,” Morris says.

“This package isn’t only terrible for healthcare, but for the economic health of the country,” he says.

If the Democrats decide to bypass a Republican filibuster in the Senate through a tactic known as reconciliation, Republicans must defeat the bill in the House, Morris says.

Given that the bill passed by only a five-vote margin in the House last year, there’s a good chance to turn the tide, Morris says.

Thirty Democratic representatives who voted for the bill now face difficult re-election challenges. he says. “If we bring pressure on those 30, I think we have an excellent chance of peeling off enough of them to defeat the bill in the House.”

He also recommends giving money to the League of American Voters so it can run ads in those districts urging the congressmen to vote no.

“This is when we have to put up or shut up,” Morris says.

If the current healthcare bill does become law, despite those efforts, there must be court challenges, he explains. “The individual mandate that lies at the heart of this bill is unconstitutional.”

And if the legislation isn’t reversed, it will cause lasting damage to the country, Morris says.

It will drive doctors out of practice, and some citizens will be denied necessary treatment.

“Those people are going to die. This is basically a bill for government-sponsored euthanasia,” Morris says.

If there’s a bright side in the matter, Morris predicts that passage of the bill will cost Democrats their control of Congress for the next decade and ruin Obama’s hopes for re-election.
