New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie denied a published report that he rejected a key condition for becoming Mitt Romney's running mate: that he resign as governor.

According to a story Monday in the New York Post, Romney's aides believed that pay-to-play laws would have prohibited the country’s largest banks from contributing to a Romney-Christie campaign if they they did business with the state of New Jersey.

Christie wouldn't step down as governor because he didn’t think Romney would beat President Barack Obama, according to the Post.

On the floor of the Republican National Convention Monday in Tampa, Christie disparaged the Post piece, calling it “completely shoddy reporting."

His top political adviser, Bill Palatucci, scoffed at the story as well.

"From my perspective, the story is inaccurate," he told The New Jersey Star-Ledger. The idea that Christie doesn’t think Romney can win is "crazy," Palatucci said. "He's going everywhere for the guy, and I read the polls. It's extremely tight."

Romney senior strategist Russ Schriefer told “Fox and Friends” that he spoke to Christie about the report and that the governor was none too happy about it.

"He said it’s totally not true and, in fact . . . he used a little bit stronger language than that," Schriefer said. “He was, let’s put it this way, blunt about his denial.”

Christie will deliver the convention's keynote address Tuesday.
