A new U.S. Defense Department report on the threat from China paints a detailed picture of a modernizing Chinese military that is committed to achieving a comprehensive capacity for localized and regional wars. Most notably, the report says the continued transformation of the Chinese military and broader espionage efforts “represent a growing and persistent threat to [the] U.S. ”

The report, Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China 2012, depicts an emerging China acutely focused on modernization of its core military capabilities, which the Pentagon sees as part of a two-pronged approach to ensure, even by force, reunification with Taiwan and the prevention of U.S. forces from interceding in a conflict in the Taiwan Strait. China ’s larger goal, however, is of even greater concern.
