Escalating tensions with North Korea have put the United States is in ‘deep doo doo,’ former Vice President Dick Cheney told Republican lawmakers Tuesday.

Cheney met for about 10 minutes with GOP leadership, CNN reports. Rep. Steve Southerland of Florida, who was in the meeting, told CNN that Cheney didn’t give an opinion on what course of action the United States should be taking, nor did he offer a critique of how he thought the Obama Administration was handling the crisis.

But he did advise them not to “eliminate any possibility.”

Southerland said Cheney talked about North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and related some of his experience dealing with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. Cheney said such dictators don’t share the United States’ worldview and “you never know what they're thinking,”

“Here's a young guy we don't know very much about – have very little intel on him, so we just need to make sure that we don't assume why he's doing what he's doing, because he could be doing what he's doing for any number of reasons,” Southerland quoted Cheney as saying.
