Republican women in the House have formed a new congressional caucus called the Women’s Policy Committee, a group House Speaker John Boehner said would add “a new perspective” on a variety issues facing the nation’s lawmakers.

Chaired by California Rep. Mary Bono Mack, the policy committee includes all 24 GOP women now serving in the House from 17 states.

There was no mention in a Bono Mack statement announcing the caucus group about what specifically prompted its sudden formation. But Republicans have been looking for ways to counter charges from Democrats this election year that the party is waging a “war on women” through legislation aimed at making it more difficult to obtain abortions and contraceptives.

Bono Mack sought to focus attention in the statement on the economy, which is the main thrust of Republican campaign efforts this year aimed at President Barack Obama and Democratic members of Congress.

“As mothers, grandmothers, daughters, wives and sisters, women often see things in a different context,” Bono Mack said in the statement. “Today, our nation is confronting historic challenges — from a $15 trillion national debt to a sluggish economy that has suffered through 39 straight months of unemployment above 8 percent.

“As Republican women, we have some really unique ideas for moving our nation forward, and we’re excited about working together to find solutions."

Although, they don’t always vote the same way or view things exactly in the same light, the women lawmakers joined together in a video posted on YouTube and on the House Republican Conference website to emphasize their common goal of “leading the charge,” as they put it, “to make America great again.”

“While our backgrounds are different, one thing is not: we are all conservative reformers — committed to leaving America better for our children and grandchildren than it was for us,” they said in the video.
